THE PRODUCTION OF SPACE, SMIZZ STYLE (AKA STREET PERFORMANCES)
This work is still in the early stages of development. So this is just a tickler.
However, it's a series of works that combines my obsession with finding social space within the city and combines it with my drawing.
In this sense, taking influence from Henri Lefebrve's writings on the 'Production of Space'. Throughout the stills we see that a recombination of body, image, thought and action lies at the heart of the work; one that is both an integration of abstract and concrete, object and performance. Often we see myself playing with the edge. The edge is both a physical edge (wall, road) but also a personal edge (referring to my working class background). The space created between my body, the architecture and the drawings creates a moment of confrontation between the self and the external world. It becomes a temporal consideration of the spatial that involves the discontinuous use of particular parts of the city. As Lefebrve notes, People use space, and particular boundary of spaces of passage and encounter, to create their own identity and often do so through spaces of ritual and initation. By creating small narratives through drawing, somewhat scaring the space, I am bringing to the table questions of the production of space, an interaction with the city, and the question of the everyday being turned into a piece of art.
